Picked up earlier today, very happy. First jobs are returning to stock, refit bumpers and return front grill to black. It's a real struggle to start when warm, so will grab the spanners out and see what's occurring. Engine is very oily, air filter assembly mucky and there's a missing exhaust manifold bolt.
Otherwise, just drive her !! My first 1200s - feel the powarrrrr _________________

what....nice project!!....that was my lovely car
Dave, disappointed you dont like my 'Mark 1 Facelift'....you didn't look like a return-it-to-stock sort of chap! But it does got far too many double-takers who've no idea what it is.
Re hot starting, it was a pain but not a struggle for me....just floor it, crank it and when she catches pump the gas to keep her running, you'll get used to it!! You could try exhaust wrap to keep the heat down, maybe a Weber conversion.
Anyway, glad you're happy....Adrian |

I'm only projecting a little paint & bumpers! Then probably a little less height.
I know she starts after some cranking - but I don't really want to get used to it, can't be too hard to find the issue and get it sorted. Starter motor had a good old moan this morning
But I am loving it Adrian, really am _________________

Hi Dave,
so you have a hot start problem which could be due to I guess no fuel ie evaporation or too much fuel ie float stuck in carb leading to hot engine soak through resulting in flooding. both are possible.
firstly does the exhaust, bay area smell of petrol when this happens and your cranking if yes then flooding if no then evaporation probably. if the later try cranking whilst someone sprays easy start into the intake if you get fire in the hole quickly then you have a heat issue under the engine bay which may be caused by a whole number of issues, you may have a partially closed thermostat blocked or partially blocked radiator your carb may need an overhaul you may be running lean, head gasket on way out etc.
start with a compression test if all ok then flushing the coolant system and putting a new thermostat in may solve the problem, don't forget to reverse flush the system and forward flush it till water runs clear without a thermostat in. oh and good luck, take it your still in Swindon? _________________ VBOA Secretary |

There is generally a smell of fuel yes, haven't particularly noticed if it's only when hot though to be honest!
I haven't yet gone through the engine, have myself a headset (but no head bolts yet). plan on whipping a part the inlet and cleaning things up. Will inspect the plugs see how they look visually, replace some gaskets and go from there. Will carry out a comp test too, but plan to replace the HG anyway as it's so simple on the OHV!
Previous seller said he had replaced the stat with OE part not long ago, cooling does seem fine in traffic. Fan spins up as it should and cools right down happily enough. Talking about heat though, shouldn't the plugs/leads have those heat protection extension jobbies? I recall having them on my old 1300s Mk1's.
Yep still knocking about in Swindon, be nice to arrange a meet up sometime pal _________________

it could be a stuck float in the carb, basically when the engine is cold it needs shed loads of fuel anyway so having a stuck float isn't a problem, when engine is hot however too much fuel will extinguish your spark creating lots of soot like running with the choke on constantly.
yep I don't have any of my Mk1s on the road yet this year _________________ VBOA Secretary |

Interesting ... I'll have a little poke around the carb too then. I kept a Varajet 2 from one of my old 1300s, have a rebuild kit for it - would this mate up to the OHV? I'm guessing not, inlet looks different.
Ah sorry to hear you don't have a Mk1 on the road atm! _________________

hi Dave, i seem to remember the MOT man saying a few years ago that the idle throttle stop screw had bottomed out and he suspected that there may be a partial blocked jet or passsageway in the carb somewhere....but i do think its a lot to do with fuel evaporation on the non-crossflow engine.....i'd try some exhaust wrap first....but, as i say, i just lived with it for 6 years.....Adrian |
