ok, thought I'd kick off this section with my project...

The idea came to me when I was 18yrs old, I set my sights on owning a MK1 GTE, but having seen 16v mk1's and occasionally a turbo'd mk1 I wanted to go one better - a 4x4 turbo'd mk1!

First of all I had to find the perfect car to start the project with. Luckily I came across a red GTE for sale. The car was is great condition having been a standard condition show car for many years. But I figured it had plenty of years as a standard show car, time to let it have some fun! big grin

So the car was bought for 700 smackers and completely stripped down to a bare shell and then taken down to PTS Tuning in Luton who had agreed to do the 4x4 running gear conversion in exchange for a CMS powered website.

A 4x4 Cav was found for free by Alan (Raz) and we delivered that down to PTS as well.

As PTS were doing the work as a contra job, they would work on the car in their spare time, hence it taking quite a while to get finished.

This gave me plenty of time to source a decent turbo engine, gearbox and transfer box. I decided the best route would be to buy a Calibra turbo and strip it of the parts I needed and sell the parts I didn't.

I stumbled across a cally turbo in Banbury with a good engine, working 4x4 and plenty of goodies attached to the engine, including lightened flywheel, large intercooler etc. The turbo had been replaced just over a year ago and the engine looked like it might have had a recent rebuilt also. Only thing missing was a set of EDS chips (which it used to have, but the previous owner removed before selling it).

The car was bought for 1600 and stripped bare Very Happy Turns out the engine has a coscast head (as Turbo Tom pointed out to me today) so I got a real bargain there!!

The mk1 is now pretty much ready to collect from PTS now and so the rebuild will commence in January 2006, hopefully getting it ready in time for a certain trip to Germany.

I took a week off to get the car painted, it was a bit manic but we got it done somehow! I helped out during the week mostly sanding everything and anything in sight. It was the middle of winter also so it was sodding cold, but good fun.

Scouse's bodyshop did the respray for me and although with more time we could have got a better finish inside, it didn't matter as I was covering it all up anyhow.

This is the astra stripped outside of bodyshop in Liverpool.

Few tiny dents sorted and holes filled in sills... won't be needing them anymore.
