There might be crud in the tank. How does it cut out does it chug and splutter etc? What about the pump does it still work when the car has died. Have you checked that the fuel pump is still providing fuel. ? i.e have it pumping into a bucket etc.
Electrical wiring are the earths ok is the ECU powered and earthed properly. You said its had a new ECU is it the right ECU? Maybe swap back to the original.
You can get the coil tested at places like CAFCO.
Have you made any progress? I would offer to come over and have a look but are too far away. |

Rossi...Did you ever get the coolant temp sensor checked out, it resides just below the alternator and down to the left looking from the windscreen and has a white plug on it. I am convinced this is your problem as I have explained a few times of my problems after rebuilding my engine when it wouldn't start and it just turned out to be disconnected as I had forgotten to plug it in, like I say about 2 litres of fuel in the oil dont do a new engine much good but even though it was seriously flooding it still don't start. . _________________

Things to check if you havent already:
Coolant temp sensor has got to be top of the list.
Airflow meter.
I presume both of these could overfuel the car if not connected/working properly.
Try them and then report back if you can. |

The airflow meter has been checked and is OK.
There aren't many things left to check. I'll get the coolant temp sensor checked then it will be on to the next thing. |

I tjink the coolant sensors are pretty cheap so you might as well buy a new one anyway. |

I checked all the leads/connections yesterday and it now starts (thanks for your suggestions - I really should have put my faith in you guys rather than a mechanic!!). The next problem I need your help to solve is that it ticks over nicely until you put your foot on the accelerator and then the revs go right down and it cuts out. Can anyone help me solve this problem? |

Is this not the same problem? Are you doubly sure the coolant sensor is working fine? Defo think about buying a new one can get them from Vauxhalls or try Partco/Halfords etc. Also check with a multimeter that there is a voltage across the terminals of the plug to the coolant sensor.

Hi, i had exactly the same problem. My car would tick over nicely but a soon as you try to take of it would die. The problem was that i had just fitted a new fuel pump from LUCAS at the cost of £110, i got a hold of one off a mk2 gte and the car then drove like a dream. Dont know if that helps but i thought id tell you anyway. |

Take the air filter out of the airbox and try it again. If it runs fine without it, replace the filter as soon as possible.
Check the pipe from the airflow meter to the inlet fanimold, for holes and also get a mate to rev it and see if it's collapsing in on itself - they go soft and perish over time. _________________

Yes, make sure you have replaced the fuel filter (next to the fuel pump) as this will probably be clagged up. YOu can cut it in half to see if it was clagged up. Also make sure you double check that coolant sensor and follow trickys advice. |

If after all these things its still a bit tempremental I'd be tempted to empty the fuel tank completly and fill it up again with fresh fuel. When was the last time the tank was filled up to the top? |
