Check the inlet pipe for splits, they have been known to split and draw air on the wrong side of the air flow meter and the car cannot compensate for it as it is no longer being metered. _________________

Possible the final stage amplifier on the coil breaking down under load, its the item with the plug coming out of it coming from the bottom of the distributor to the coil if memory serves me right. _________________

Neither, the final stage amp. They're around £30 for an aftermarket one.
This is a CX20E one don't know if its any good for a 1.8.
