The listing says it will suit 13N or 13S. I think its a different cam in the S that makes the difference. The gasket set will be the same for both. tbh £9 delivered its worth a punt.
Just having a look through haynes manual page 20 if you got one. the only difference I can see is the camshaft.

Its that that gives the 1.3S high Compression and 1.3 Low compression

But i'm sure someone will be along shortly to confirm this or piss on my chips big grin

A camshaft can't change the compression, that will be done by either the pistons or head.
the gaskets should all be the same tho.

That's what I Thought. But reading into the Haynes figures the pistons are the same. and there is no mention of difference in crank stroke. But there is a longer duration of inlet valve openings. both Inlet will open at 24 deg Before TDC on both 1300. on the regular 1.3 it will not close till 73 deg After BDC. however on the 1.3S the valve does not close till 78 deg After BDC. A longer duration open (5 deg) on the suck stroke so more suckage = more air to compress upping the comp ratio.. that's my theory. I welcome comments.

seem it works ok then but wonder if the sump pick up may need looking at? If its starved of oil in the early point o startt up, this is also where the damage can be done. Confused

My mate that helped me worked for vauxhall. He says that a trick of the trade was when they used to change head gaskets they used to get the lifters out and squeeze the old oil out. Not blaming Lloyd one bit for anything that's happened but that wasn't done when the hg was swapped. My mate says that there would most probably been some crap in the lifters hence why they were so tight to squeeze the old out and the tappy engine

Would that damage be loud tho as the noise sounds like someone has chucked a bolt in the engine.....

Also can I rule the auto box out as it makes the noise in neutral?

I think you should blame it on the auto box and fit a manual one big grin

I can see your thinking on there, and technically it's kinda right, at higher revs the longer duration will be creating more compression than the short due to the increased amount of air it can suck in compared to the other cam.
But compression is measured at low revs where the engine will in theory will be able to suck in the whole 1.3 L of air/fuel mix so both cams will be able to supply the same amount of air/fuel.

I'm sure the 1.3s had a bigger cam than the normal 1.3. It also had a twin choke carb iirc.

and the pistons ARE NOT THE SAME.
there is a difference at the piston heads.

Bit more of an update. I now have everything (at least I think I do) to do the job. Just ordered a full cam kit which includes follewers and lifters for £130.

Have got a full head gasket kit, sump gasket and cam belt also.
Will fire her up when done and if noise is still there I will scream really loudly, stamp my feet a lot, cry and then look more closely at the bottom end.

Yeah have figured it out now cheers.

This is state of play at moment.

While it was all in bits i decided to give all the engine parts a good going over with the Jizer and a repaint

Thinking of doing block and sump in black and am going to replace all old bolts and jubilees with nice shiny new ones. big grin
Cam kit will arrive on thursday.

it says I need to use high quality oil on the cam internals that fit against the housing. Any ideas on what to use please.
