so the rear beam of a mk2 will fit on a mk1? is it a straight swap or does it need modding?

Straight swop. All you'll need to do is fiddle about with the handbrake cable a bit.

I'd go for a Mk3 GSi rear beam, actually I am coming to think of it...laughing

Best car for a donor? Well, Anything with a decent redtop (C20XE) engine in it. Don't kill the Mk2 Astra's, dig into a Calibra or a Cav instead... cool

Make sure that you get everything with it that you are going to need, in fact you are better off if you have the room to get the entire car.

No you don't...

...I've fitted 2 mk2 gte and a mk3 gsi beam before and have never had to do any modds to get them to fit, work and pass an MOT.

Handbrake cables don't fit spot on, but mot station will pass you know problems.

Mk3 GSI beam runs a 20mm wider track at the back........the wider the better I say!!! Unless you have some mad offset on your tyres, I'd still rather chop arches tho'

Do they??

Why did i bother swaping the cav beam for a gsi one then??

The Cav rear beam IS 20mm wider on the track than the mk1.

If your gonna get flippant young man I will let the whole board know how you went and bought a new beam from a scrappers for £100 so you could convert to 5 stud, only to realise that the Mk2 you had also has stub axels and the beam was a complete and utter waste of time....laughing

Opps did I let that one slip laughing

But yeah he's right it's the Cav and not the GSi, I think???

So why do i have a mk3 astra beam with cav turbo stub axles in place of the mk2 astra gte beam that i sold??

God sake Jay..The abs sender hole on the mk2 astra beam is not as big as the mk3s, THIS IS WHY I BOUGHT IT!!

I COULD, if i wanted or could have been bothered to do, is enlarge the hole

Mk 2 16v GTE is the best donor car cause of all the goodies you can nick, engine, box, front brakes, rear beam, lcd dash, leccy windows and mirrors, theese all fit without too much grief(or without any grief at all!!!)

The mk3 gsi beam is exactly the same width as a mk2, the geometry is slightly different and the hole is bigger in the middle making it easier to do a 5 stud conversion if you wish, but apart from that they are the same.
The handbrake needs a small amount of work on either.
