I'd like to remove my Astra 1300 estate's starter motor for overhaul. According to the Haynes manual "this is best done from underneath or if you prefer not to work under the car it will be almost essential to remove the exhaust downpipe and manifold on the 1196cc engine and at least the air cleaner on the 1297cc engine".
This doesn't seem to bear any relationship to my car! I can get at the lower bolt securing the starter but no way can I get anything on the top bolt. I've removed the aircleaner but it looks as if the Inlet manifold has to be removed to work on the top bolt.
Has anyone else encountered this? Am I being stupid and missing something? If I take off the manifold that will need a new gasket and torgue wrench to put it back on won't it?
I'd appreciate some advice from someone who's done this before.
regards,

I swapped mine a while ago without removal of anything apart from the starter itself. Long bar with a socket on it, will gain you access to unbolt the top, still a pita, but do-able. _________________

Get some pics up when you do it as I've got to change mine sometime when I do my auto to manual conversion, as I believe the starter on mine won't work with a manual box apparently. |

they are easier from underneath if youve got acess to a lift, but they are a piece of piss from the top aswell.
make sure you take the earth off the battery, take the bottom bolt off first (above the driveshaft)
Then take off the wiring, then the top bolt (near the speedo cable). _________________ [Click here to pay ransom to view photos] |

Well I got mine off eventually. Thanks for the advice chaps. Do you have an oil trap on the crankcase breather that gets in the way? It seemed almost impossible to get a socket on the top bolt without removing it. I'm wondering how I'm going to get the starter back on. Getting the top bolt back in looks like even more of a challenge than getting it off. _________________ Barry Cash |

Bit of blue tac on the top of the bolt head & on a long bar with the bolt in the socket, spin it with your hands first so you can feel the threads take, jobs a good one. _________________
