|
|
Hello,I have finally gathered the tools and the means to start the restoration of my Kadett D GTE, my brother gaved it to me when I was 19, It´s been 11 years since, and the car has been waiting for restoration since that time. About allmost 4 years ago I bought 1.2s mk1 to use it for spare parts, but the car had only the front windshield cracked, and I hesitated to use it, and tought in putting it back on the road, but now I´ve gave up on that idea, because of the money I would spend on the 1.2s I could use it instead on the GTE.
Now the doubts, you guys are way more experienced than me, this will be my first restoration. And I am planning to either buy a welder and learn how to weld and do all the welds myself, or pay a profissional to do it for me. As you can see the 1.2s body is in much better condition than the GTE, would it be a good idea to cut panels and peaces of metal from the 1.2s to use on the GTE?
(The dark spots on the GTE is rust converter)
I want to use the GTE body, and not just turn the 1.2s into a GTE, because the GTE has a sentimental value for me, and in the end it will be a real GTE on paper.
Now the photos, the 1200s, the floors are much better than the GTE ones.
And the GTE:
I know it looks bad, but love fixes everything right?

Sorry I would say that the GTE is too far gone
Unless you can get all new panels for it?

No fix the GTE!
It's gone in some weird places but you've got most of the panels you need.

Yes, the bonnet I can use the 1200s one, the front wings the same, the boot of the GTE is with some rust spots, but can be fixed, the rear side panel can be removed from the 1200s and be welded into the GTE (I think, is it a good ideia to remove a panel from a car and weld into another?) I think the only thing I will have to buy is the front panel, as I want the one with the radiator vent holes.
BTW does anyone has feedback on these panels, in case I need them

I sent mine back.
They are not the same as the picture. The ones in the picture are klokerholm (spelling) and look a really good fit. The one you get are not the same but unfortunately you don't have a great deal of choice these days.
With a bit of beating, they could work.
Check my resto thread in my sig. Last few pages are messing around with the floor.

Thank you for the answear, I would only use those in last case, cause the ones in the 1200s are not that bad, it´s cheaper to just cut them and then weld them on the GTE. I´ll take a better picture of the 1200s floors as soon as I can and post here to ask for opinions.

You should be able to pretty much remove the entire floor and that cross member in one go.
the top of the exhaust tunnel above where the gear linkage goes is double skinned.
Lots of spot-weld removal for you!

Hello, I have been busy working, on the gte, I removed all the paint and anti-gravel from the the front, and because that will be covered again with anti-gravel I have been using hammerite, white, with high-gloss, I plan to later remove it's gloss with sandpaper, just to make sure the anti-gravel sticks to it fine (I am only using the hammerite on the areas thatwill be covered with anti-gravel) on the other visible areas I will use normal primer sprayed with the compressor to have a smoother finish. I am using hammerite with a brush, because at the moment I have other cars around the gte, and can't use the compressor to avoid the overspray to travel to the cars paint.
Now the question, is it wrong to use the hammerite on the car?
I will post pictures of it later.

Looks like you've got a serious amount of work in front of you. All the best luck in getting it sorted.
I don't think there will be a problem with the hammerite but if it was me I'd etch prime it then stone chip.
If there's some surface rust I'd clean it as best as possible then treat it it using POR15 products before painting with stone chip etc

I have etch primer, but it is a spray can, I´ve used the hammerite, because I tought it would be more rust protective, because of the 3 layers of paint with the brush, as recomended in the instructions , I was saving the etch primer spray to the areas that will be visible (not covered with stone chip)

Get yourself some jenolite and brush that on the night before you etch prime. I used Bonda primer (check out the red paint near the beginning of my resto). Some of it's been on for over two years in a damp garage and it still perfect.
