This is one for EXUPTOY i think as you seem to know what you're talking about...
Well, i need to do some welding on the mk1 and i wanted a little advice really.
I want (well more like NEED) to weld some patches on the floor of the mk1 but want them to be invisible when painted as shes going to be stripped out and i don't want to see them. How would / could i go about this? I've read in one of your previous posts about this tool you can get that will create a sort of set back lip? Would this be the best way of doing it. I was thinking that this could be done to the sheet metal i wanted to weld, then place this from the rear or underside of the hole then weld from the front or upper side around the edge. Then the weld could be ground down flush to make a very neat looking weld that would hopefully disappear when painted??
Only problem is i can't use this method on all of the welds as one of the biggest is on the corner of the drivers bulkhead/floorpan and inner arch. What method would be good for this?
Also, what thickness metal should i use? Whats the orig metal thickness, and should i use thicker?
I'll need to buy a welder, haven't got alot of money, well, i haven't got any at the moment (got me a house now tho...woohoo ) so what should i be looking for? Second hand is a real possibility so i can get a little more for me money. Also, what sort of wire and gas should i use, what wheel and tip sizes, or does that depend on wire?
Erm... i think thats enough for now...
Any tips on how to weld would be nice as well _________________ Nurburgring - Not for girls |

Wouldn't you weld it up and then grind the welds down so they don't show? _________________ 4x4 Turbo MK1 Astra - may actually be finished this year!

I am hurt....
I could do that a piece of wee wee....the tool you are asking about is an edge setter, or joggler. You don't need it for the bits that want doing on yours, you would spend all day trying to get the edges right as it is not only in a tight space but also on about 3 different planes.
I am throwing my toys outta the pram now though, and I am buying a new welder to work on my cars only....and it'll be shiney. _________________ The most hip hop mofo to ever come out of Halifax.....Jam Master Jay in d house!!!

Its not that i don't value your opinion its just that some other peps may have a little more experience thats all, its all information for the brain, and i wanted some ideas for how i should go about making the welds invisible and all that...

Could be a problem with tomorrow.....
I might be having Lewis after school.
Are you £300 short on the bond? Just think of the money you will be saving by exiting stage left from the place where you are....
Oh I hope your landlord doesn't read here!!! _________________ The most hip hop mofo to ever come out of Halifax.....Jam Master Jay in d house!!! |
