Well, got a few hours on it on Saturday. First job removing the body kit side skirts took a lot longer than expected but it soon started coming apart.
Thought I'd tackle the nearside inner wing first as this was the worst bit.
Got the wing off and found this, somebody's been here before:
20 mins picking all the seam sealer out and using a thingy wheel in the drill:
Tonights job, get the outrigger off - hopefully this can re-used as I can't seem to get one for the nearside any more and cut out the rust in the "Number one Astra rusty area" ready for a plate. Might need to replace the wing mount as the wing didn't fit and it has been bodged a bit. _________________ "A fine example of how not to build a car..."

Well, the previous artful bodger left a nice surprise behind the outrigger. Or should I say, didn't leave much.
I think the next step is definitely engine out and see what the bulkhead is going.
Really hope I haven't bought a cheese GTE but I suppose it's highly likely anyway... _________________ "A fine example of how not to build a car..."

Go buy a big sheet of metal a ball peen hammer and get creative with the plates. That bits double skinned so you'll have something to weld to.
Use thin card board to make templates first. The stuff cans of carling come in is great |

Managed to get the engine out today. Was convinced it would come out the top but in the end hoisted the car up with the engine crane, lowered the engine onto some blocks, undid the mounts and hoisted the car back up in the air.
f**king thing weighs a tonne with the gearbox attached!
Hopefully monday night will see an empty engine bay - preferably without any more holes! _________________ "A fine example of how not to build a car..."

When putting it back in, make sure you put it in under the car. I tried to put complete engine and gear box in the minx from the top and made a right mess oh the engine bay
The last one Did was a piece of p!ss from underneath! keep up the good work. _________________ There's no such thing as a stupid question... Just stupid people! |

I think you're right mate. Not sure how I'm gonna lift the shel though nice it's painted.
I did contemplate knocking the gearbox off, taking the head off and rebuilding it in the car. _________________ "A fine example of how not to build a car..."

I managed it with an old thick scaffolding board lying across the from floor wells and a couple of axle stands.
didn't need it too high with the engine on it's side (a bit) and no front leg on. _________________ There's no such thing as a stupid question... Just stupid people! |

as for doing it in the car.... I think you'll find it alot easier to do it out of the car
I had mine on an old workmate so you're not lying on your back or bent over double in the engine bay. this way you can make everything clean and shiny if you are that way inclined! _________________ There's no such thing as a stupid question... Just stupid people! |

How did you get the engine up there or have you got a crane? _________________ "A fine example of how not to build a car..."
